The economy is in the dumps. Times are tough. How is one to survive in this world? We hear things like this all the time. As surprising parts of the world are growing like never before, the traditional 'developed' economies in Europe, America, and Japan and hiccoughing, sputtering, and coming to a stand still or worse- shrinking and going into mountains of debt.
While I will leave that situation for the individual to ponder, it is clear that many souls are having an extremely hard time getting a job. And not just a job that reflects their education and skills- people are having trouble finding any job at all.
I am of the opinion that yes, while a job far below one's ability and skill level is better than no job at all, and that any job is ennobling in the right context (I was a dishwasher myself for six months and I'm proud of it), there is also nothing wrong in waiting for the right job for you if you can.
As I said, I was a dishwasher and to this day feel privileged that I had that job. It was, for me, a good opportunity and got me where I needed to go. But let's face it, we cannot build a prosperous nation on an army of dishwashers. I myself have skills that are extremely inappropriate for being a dishwasher. In other words, I would be of much greater benefit to society, and hence to you, if I were in a position that used all my skill set, which among other things includes the ability to speak and write Japanese. And we're all like that, we have an optimum to give, and that optimum should be used.
At the moment I find myself searching for a career again. Times are tough, and I know it. There are some options I could perhaps take, but they would be a dead end and at the end of the day, I can't say that I'd be doing a lot for the world community in general, at least based upon my talents. So I think I'll hang tough for a while, get bills paid, and search for something better. If everyone did that, I think we'd pull out of this gloomy economy pretty quickly.
