Domain Names - How to Choose One for Your Business

There's much debate about whether or not it's a good thing to have a domain name that features one or more of your targeted keywords/phrases.
For small business websites in less competitive areas, I think it can help to have keywords within your domain. Having said that, there are sites that don't have any keywords at all in their domains and perform very well, such as Amazon.com
The most important thing is to choose a domain name you're comfortable with and reflects the image you're trying to portray for your particular business.
How easy is your domain name to spell?
Don't make it hard for people to find your website. The chances are they'll type the domain name in once (twice if you're lucky) and then give up looking for your site.
Picking a domain that's hard to spell can cause you problems as people frequently make errors when typing text into their web browsers.
Does it matter if someone else has a different version of your domain?
Let's say you want a specific domain and only the.co.uk version is available - the.com is already taken by someone else.
Should you register the domain anyway? Well, that depends on what the.com domain is being used for. If it's an active site offering a similar product or service to you, it may be best not to choose this domain as it could create confusion.
Many domains are registered and never used, so make sure you check to see it there is an active site on it before making up your mind.
Once you've made your mind up - act quickly
When you've made up your mind about a domain name, it's best to buy it right away. If you delay your purchase until you're website is nearly finished, you may find that someone else has snapped it up.
Don't let anyone register a domain on your behalf
If you've found a domain name you want, make sure you register it yourself in your own name, regardless of who is designing your website.
The reason for this is there are some unscrupulous web designers around who have been known to retain ownership of a client's domain and charge them very large sums to transfer it over.
